Raising the Debt Ceiling to Pay Previous Borrowing

Without raising the debt ceiling, our bloated and out of control federal government can’t pay for debts previously created.

To contract new debts is not the way to pay old ones. George Washington

We would be happier today had Thomas Jefferson’s sentiment been made an amendment:

I wish it were possible to obtain a single amendment to our constitution.  I would be willing to depend on that alone for the reduction of the administration of our government to the genuine principles of its constitution; I mean an additional article, taking from the federal government the power of borrowing.
